Take a look at the latest issue of the Journal of Petroleum Engineering. There is an article about BP’s latest annual outlook titled, “in 2040, Will There Be Jobs for Petroleum Engineers?” This is followed by Steve Rassenfoss’ “The Digital Future of E&P Can Lead to Data-Driven Anxiety.” Steve points out the changing role for engineers and data analysts, from new roles to to new tools. Drillbotics certainly seems to be a good prep course to help meet these changes. There is yet another article “Souped-Up Search Engines” that features ways to handle big data. It highlights the RAPID program at UT Austin. So far, Drillbotics’ data sets have been pretty small, but that might change in future competitions.
