Drillbotics Results for the 2023-2024 Competition
This year’s contest resulted in many teams who faced difficulties, yet each team offered innovative design concepts and programming. The competition highlighted several key trends in autonomous drilling:
- Advanced control systems integrating multiple sensors and actuators
- Machine learning applications for real-time decision making
- Innovative Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) designs
- Semantic data integration for improved system interoperability
- Collision avoidance systems for multi-well planning
Every team had considerable strengths that impressed the judges, and all teams encountered problems at the final test. Judges had to balance these issues and make the difficult decision of picking winners. The final choice was naming Clausthal University of Technology (TUC) the winning team selected to travel to Stavanger to present at the 2025 SPE/IADC Drilling Conference. The paper will be co-authored by the Directional Drilling team from the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, in Ghana.
Group A Results:
1st – UMaT – Directional Drilling
2nd – UMaT – Well Control
Group B Results:
1st – TUC
2nd – UofC
All teams should be commended for their intense study programs to understand the physics behind the drilling challenges and their creative solutions building and modeling the rig, the sensors, the algorithms, the GUI, and incorporating the integration with the D-WIS semantic communication system and the Norce simulation. Congratulations to all!
