For the Drillbotics competition, team safety is very important to us. This is one of the first things that judges look for. Appendix B mentions a safety case and outlines just some of the areas that teams should examine to ensure they have a safe design and follow safe procedures. Perhaps you should also be aware of a technical section at SPE that focuses on human factors. They look at how to incorporate human actions into the design of automated systems and other processes. To evaluate a system or process for safety requires experience and a willingness to look beyond the first layer of every issue. A good example of this examination technique can be found in this free webinar available via the Human Factors Technical Section and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health IOSH presented by Marcin Nazaruk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Uyb10BTVX0
Good safety practices go well beyond the competition. It should be part of your future activities in your career and your personal life.
